Please allow me to introduce my self as the Rolling Stones sing in Sympathy for the devil. I'm really just a fan of Farmboyz Et. Al. The kind Father Tony asked me to contribute to his new venture and as a non practicing cafeteria Irish Catholic well.......I still can't say no to a man of the cloth.
I am a 25 year veteran of the NYPD currently serving in the Bronx. Unlike many I have spent nearly my entire career on the streets in the urban underclass sections of the city. I disfavor "desk jockey's" and firmly believe good Police can and do make a difference on the street. Ed Koch swore me into the Police Department he defines himself as i do " A Liberal With Sanity".
I attended school in New York and graduated from CUNY Law School in 1999. I have been published in several law enforcement magazines and have had several Op-Ed pieces published including in the New York Times.
Good Cop and Bad Cop: Senators Adams and Monserrate
Many many not be aware that two current N.Y. State Senators who are former colleagues of mine at the NYPD. They are Eric Adams and Hiram Monserrate.
The latter voted against legalizing gay marriage while the former supported the legislation. I worked with Adams and was in the PBA ( police Union ) with his current chief of staff.
In supporting gay marriage Senator Adams cited the seminal case of Loving v Virginia. In short order the Lovings were an interracial couple whose crime was to be white and black and in love. As such they were found guilty of violating The State of Virgina's statutory ban on interracial marriages. In finding them guilty here is what the Judge stated:
Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."
At sentencing the Judge being a true southern gentleman offered some true southern hospitality. He stated that he would not send them to prison for one year on the condition they would leave the state for 25 years! It took the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule this insane State decision.
This case and the invidious language to support the right of a state to discriminate on race motivated Senator Adams to support legislative to legalize gay marriage. Senator Adams stated in his Senatorial remarks " I leave my religion outside the chamber". He is to be supported for maintaining the constitutional principles of "separation of church and state". Senator Adams is also a leader in the 100 Black Men In Law Enforcement Who Care. GLBT Officers have no such organization with the political clout and media power that African American law enforcement officer's have developed.
The bad Cop and Senator is Hiram Monserrate who was just found guilty of domestic violence and opposed gay marriage casting "nay" in his Senatorial capacity. Monserrate paid big bucks for former mob defense attorney Joseph Tacopina to get him "off the hook: for slashing and dragging his girlfriend out of their apartment My friends at the Times have a good timeline on him.
Suffice to say that in most jurisdictions in America a person convicted of domestic violence is terminated from public employment, but in New York State, Monserrate may not only maintain his public employment, he is also allowed to vote in denying us equal equality under the law. Only in New York.
