I really enjoyed this profile of Larry Kramer from New York magazine. It sounds like he'd be a nightmare to deal with on a personal basis day after day, but in this time when the Democratic Party listens only to the wishes of its corporate overlords and Americans seem indifferent to everything except the latest celebrity scandal, we're sorely in need of about a hundred Larry Kramers to kick some major ass. I'll be buying his The American People in whatever form it eventually materializes.

Union Square Marriage Equality Rally

We had a sunny blue morning in NYC. At this time of year I make a special effort to enjoy sunlight at every opportunity. During the late Autumn and Winter months, I am outdoors in the sun for only 10 or 15 minutes on my way to work in the morning. The first year I worked in Midtown, another motivation for our tall glass skyscrapers became clear: without them, we 9 to 5 worker bees would forget there's a sun at all.
By the time I arrived at last night's marriage equality rally in Union Square, night had fallen and a chill was creeping into the air. Outerwear in NYC trend to blues, blacks, and very dark colors, making the crowd look homogeneous to my eye. Compared to last year's Prop 8 march, there were far fewer signs. The sound system was not effective at the rear of the crowd, and those who couldn't hear were making small talk among themselves, compounding the problem.

Equality NOW!

I missed the rally last night in Times Square. I'm going to the rally tonight in Union Square, details for which are below. I wish I had time to make big signs, but I'm stuck at the office today. I'll be creatively using my laser printer!
The NYC response to Prop 8's passage was huge. I hope that our response to this affront in our own state will be larger by several orders of magnitude. Last night and tonight should be the first of many rallies and huge political action.
And perhaps most importantly, we need to get rid of the Democrats who betrayed us and elect Democrats who will support us for the next vote. A clear message must be sent: we will not be taken for granted.
