The Normal Heart - A Review

There were several ways I considered approaching writing this review. One idea was to simply to write the word "exceptional" over and over again.  Other words that came to mind were "shattering," "moving" and, sadly, "timely."

However it is probably best to handle this in a traditional format.

Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart, which opened last night on Broadway...wait a minute, let's put this in perspective.  The Normal Heart, a play that has become an irreplaceable piece of not just gay theatrical canon but of theatrical canon in general, had its Broadway opening last night a full twenty years after it was first produced off-Broadway.  It has taken that long for this brutally honest yet achingly heartfelt play to finally make its way to the Great White Way.

Larry Kramer Against GMHC's Move To 10th And 33rd

The annual AIDS walk to benefit GMHC will take place in Central Park this weekend. Something tells me that it might not be the usual show of unity.

I'll admit I'm happy with this interview with New Yorker Larry Kramer. It's out today in the South Florida Gay News. I'll probably hear from Larry later today. Not quite sure what to expect. Not so happy with the Lesbian Moms and Wanda Sykes getting the bigger headline.

I really enjoyed this profile of Larry Kramer from New York magazine. It sounds like he'd be a nightmare to deal with on a personal basis day after day, but in this time when the Democratic Party listens only to the wishes of its corporate overlords and Americans seem indifferent to everything except the latest celebrity scandal, we're sorely in need of about a hundred Larry Kramers to kick some major ass. I'll be buying his The American People in whatever form it eventually materializes.
