Fight Back New York fights back against “Counter Punch”

Anti-Equality Group’s Video Sends Wrong Message on DV

NEW YORK, NY --  Earlier this week, an anti-equality group launched a
campaign called “Counter Punch” seemingly in response to Fight Back
New York, and included as part of the launch a video of a boxer and a
boxing glove repeatedly punching through a white plane.

“Releasing these kinds of imagery in the midst of a campaign where one
of the candidates, Hiram Monserrate, has been convicted of domestic
violence is insensitive and irresponsible,” said Valerie Berlin, a
spokesperson for Fight Back New York. “This group is basically sending
the message that they’d rather have a convicted abuser in office than
someone who votes for equal rights for gay and lesbian New Yorkers.
What a terrible example to set for the young men and women of the
thirteenth senate district.”

Hiram Monserrate was convicted on a misdemeanor assault charge in
October 2009 for brutally handling his girlfriend during a domestic
altercation. He was subsequently expelled from the New York State
Senate by his colleagues by a bipartisan vote of 53-8 on February

"I don't see how anyone who has a mother, sister, or daughter could
pull the lever for this man who has been convicted of a violent
assault of a woman — groups that encourage one to do so do not reflect
New York values and seriously harm efforts to eradicate the scourge of
domestic violence,” said Berlin.

Fight Back New York is a political action committee that seeks to
remove from office New York State Senators who vote against or block
legislation that would provide equality and safety for LGBT New
Yorkers. Fight Back New York’s first target for defeat is Hiram
